According to the Belkin support website, Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP) is a security protocol employed for protecting wireless networks from unwanted intruders. WEP security entails the use of a WEP key for accessing the wireless network. A WEP key can either by 64-bit or 128-bit and is made up of a combination of letters between A and F and numbers between 0 and 9. A 64-bit WEP key uses a string of 10 characters and a 128-bit WEP key uses a string of 26 characters. Once the WEP key has been programmed into the wireless router, it can be found by accessing the router using the Web user interface.

  1. 1

Connect a computer to one of the LAN ports on the back of the Belkin router using a Ethernet cable. There are usually four LAN ports on the back of the router, and the cable should run from one of these ports to the Ethernet port of the computer.

  2. 2

Open a Web browser on the computer connected to the router. Either Firefox or Internet Explorer will work for this process. Type "" into the address bar of the Web browser and hit "Enter" on the keyboard.

  3. 3

Click "Login" on the web user interface page that opens. At the login page, enter the login user name and password if you created one previously. By default, the user name is "admin" and no password is used. Click "Submit" to continue once the information has been entered.

  4. 4

Click "Wireless" in the left column of the web user interface. The page that opens is used to set up a WEP key. However, the existing WEP key will also be shown in the "PassPhrase" field of the page. This WEP key can be used to log on to the Belkin router from any wireless-enabled computer.
