A sugar sheet lets you stick printed images on to an iced cake. Sugar sheets can be bought online, at cake decorating suppliers, or even at the local bakery. Sugar sheets, also called cake stickers, can even be printed to your specifications to create a personalised cake for any occasion. With proper application, a sugar sheet lets even an inexperienced cake decorator make a clever and attractive cake.

  1. 1

Apply a thin layer of icing over the entire cake to create the base for an evenly iced cake. Chill the cake in the freezer to set this layer of icing, called a crumb layer.

  2. 2

Use an offset spatula to spread a layer of icing on your cake. Work to make this layer quite smooth and even. Place the cake into the fridge for an hour or so, then remove. Take a foam roller and smooth the surface of the icing before starting to apply the sugar sheet to the cake.

  3. 3

Hold each end of the printed cake photo sugar sheet. Scrape the back of the sheet across the sharp edge of a counter or table to remove the backing paper.

  4. 4

Lay the sugar sheet onto the cake, pressing it gently from the middle outwards to the edges.

  5. 5

Place a tip on to a cake decorating bag, securing it with a coupler. Pipe icing around the edges of your sugar sheet as desired to finish your cake.

Tips and warnings

  • Use a hair dryer to help the backing release from the sugar sheet.
  • Experiment with making your own sugar sheets using edible inks and icing sheets in a standard home printer.
