After access to the Internet became more widespread and users were more commonly using always-on connections like those obtained from cable or DSL, application developers began to include components in their programs that would automatically contact their servers upon launch. This feature (sometimes referred to as "calling home") is used for a variety of purposes, including to check the version of the user's software against the most up-to-date version on the server or to send usage and statistical information to the developers. Privacy concerns have led some users to search for ways to block applications from calling home, and many firewalls have the capability to do this.

Skill level:

  1. 1

Find the location of Photoshop CS4. On a Windows PC, Photoshop CS4 defaults to installing at C:\Program Files\Adobe\ Adobe Photoshop. On Mac OS X, the program defaults to installing at /User/Library/Applications/Adobe Photoshop.

  2. 2

Access your system's firewall. Both Windows and Mac OS X come with their own firewalls, or you may use one of a variety of free and commercial firewall and outbound communication blockers.

  3. 3

Access your firewall's outbound communications tab. Firewalls traditionally block two paths of communication: inward and outward. To stop Photoshop CS4 from calling Adobe, you must stop its outward communication.

  4. 4

Add the Photoshop CS4 application to your firewall's blacklist by manually entering its location or dragging and dropping the application into the blacklist.

  5. 5

Press "OK" to save your changes.

Tips and warnings

  • With outbound communication blocked, Photoshop CS4 will no longer provide you with alerts when there is a patch for your software available or when one of your filters or add-ons have been updated. You must manually check for patches or temporarily remove Photoshop CS4 from your firewall's blacklist to restore this functionality.
