How to Make School Cubbies

Written by Jennifer Streit

Classroom cubbies are an effective way to help children keep their things organized. Buying them through classroom catalogs can be expensive, though. This cost is hard to bear for charter schools, home school environments, private schools and co-ops. Making a school cubby takes a bit of time and effort but can save a substantial amount of money.

Instructions

Things you need

  • 3 plywood squares, 12 inches by 12 inches
  • 1 plywood back, 12 inches by 26 1/4 inches
  • 2 plywood sides, 12 3/4 inches by 26 1/4 inches
  • 27 finishing screws, 1 5/8 inches
  • Marking pencil
  • Tape measure
  • Drill (optional)
  • Screwdriver
  • Paint (optional)
  • Sandpaper
  1. 1

Use the tape measure and marking pencil to mark where the screws will go on the back side of the plywood back. You want three screws at equal intervals to hold each of the plywood squares. That means you need three screws down the side, 4 cm in on each end, for the end squares, and 13 1/8 inches in, which is the middle, for the center square.

  2. 2

Use the tape measure and marking pencil to mark where the screws will go on the sides as well. The measurements will be the same.

  3. 3

Use a drill, if you have one, to pre-drill shallow holes for the screws on your markings.

  4. 4

Use the screws to attach the squares to the plywood back. A power screwdriver is helpful but not necessary.

  5. 5

Attach the sides, one at a time, using the same process as with the back. You should now have two cubbies.

  6. 6

To finish the cubbies, sand the entire outer surface and paint, if desired.

Tips and warnings

  • A combination power drill and screwdriver is helpful but not necessary for this project.
  • Only use nontoxic paint, if painting.
