Whether you have a scratch in a hand-held mirror, a wall mirror, a car mirror or a make-up mirror, scratches can interfere with the reflection the mirror gives you of an image. And scratches on car rear-view and side view mirrors can be dangerous if they get in the way of your being able to see other traffic on the road. If you have large mirror scratches, you will need to resilver your mirror. You can eliminate small mirror scratches, however, with toothpaste.

Instructions

    Toothpaste

  1. 1

Spray glass cleaner on the mirror and wipe it off with a soft cloth, especially cleaning around the area of the small scratch.

  2. 2

Apply toothpaste to a cotton swab and rub the cotton swab in small circles the total length of the scratch so that it is completely covered with the toothpaste. Use regular toothpaste; don't use gel.

  3. 3

Allow the toothpaste four hours to dry and crust.

  4. 4

Wipe the toothpaste off the scratch with a soft cloth. The scratch should be gone.

  5. 5

Repeat this process for other scratches.

    White Vinegar and Dry Mustard

  1. 1

Clean the mirror with a damp cloth and dry it with a lint-free towel.

  2. 2

Prepare a mixture of one part white vinegar and one part dry mustard.

  3. 3

Use a small arts and crafts paint brush to apply the vinegar and mustard mixture to the scratch. Brush the length of the scratch with the mixture, completely filling it in.

  4. 4

Let the mixture sit on the scratch for one hour, and wipe the mustard and vinegar off the scratch with a soft cloth. The scratch should be gone.

  5. 5

Repeat this process for other scratches.

Tips and warnings

  • Avoid cleaning your mirrors with paper towels. Some paper towel products can be quite abrasive and may cause scratches to your mirrors.
