Nearly everything on a computer is customisable, which is the nice thing about the PC operating environment. Changing your toolbar colour will not have a performance or practical effect on your computing experience, but it will improve the aesthetics of your machine to your own personal preference, which is important for helping you to feel secure with your PC. This is a routine procedure that will take less than five minutes, in most cases.

Skill level:

  1. 1

Right click on the desktop and select the "Properties" option (for XP) or the "Personalize" option (for Vista and 7).

  2. 2

Click on the "Appearances" button (for XP) or the "Colors and Appearance" option (for Vista and 7).

  3. 3

Select the active title bar from the list for Windows XP machines.

  4. 4

Choose a new colour and click "Apply" to test out the new look for your desktop.

  5. 5

Press "OK" to exit the screen once you are satisfied with your changes.
