Things You'll Need:
- Budget
- Internet connection
- Contract
-
Step 1
Investigate the going rate for professional photographers in your area. It is important to know average prices so you can tell if you're getting a deal. In general, quality photographers can charge anywhere from $75 per hour to $10,000 or more for high-end wedding photographers.
-
Step 2
Set a realistic budget. Realistic means low enough for you to comfortably afford it, but high enough to attract high-quality work. Know that you are not going to get a full day of wedding photos by an experienced, reputable professional photographer for $300, but also know that you do not have to spend $5,000 or more, either.
-
Step 3
Ask friends and relatives for references. The best photographers gain their reputations via word of mouth. Many also give discounts to customers gained through personal recommendations.
-
Step 4
Ask for a personalized package. Many photographers sell packages including their time and a specific number of prints. If all you want are digital images, or you do not want wallet-sized prints but every package has them, discuss this with the photographer and ask for a lower price to omit these items.
-
Step 5
Negotiate. If the photographer is out of your budget but you love her work, tell her what you can afford and ask what she can provide in that price range.
-
Step 6
Look for a talented student at your local art school. Meet with the dean and let him know you're looking for a talented, responsible student to shoot your event and at what price. Ask for a recommendation.
