How to Find an Affordable Photographer

High-quality, professional-level photographs become family heirlooms, capturing memories cherished through generations. Such art often comes at a steep price, but there is a photographer out there in every price range that can provide beautiful work. Finding an affordable photographer can be quick and easy.

Things You'll Need:

  • Budget
  • Internet connection
  • Contract
  1. Step 1

Investigate the going rate for professional photographers in your area. It is important to know average prices so you can tell if you're getting a deal. In general, quality photographers can charge anywhere from $75 per hour to $10,000 or more for high-end wedding photographers.

  2. Step 2

Set a realistic budget. Realistic means low enough for you to comfortably afford it, but high enough to attract high-quality work. Know that you are not going to get a full day of wedding photos by an experienced, reputable professional photographer for $300, but also know that you do not have to spend $5,000 or more, either.

  3. Step 3

Ask friends and relatives for references. The best photographers gain their reputations via word of mouth. Many also give discounts to customers gained through personal recommendations.

  4. Step 4

Ask for a personalized package. Many photographers sell packages including their time and a specific number of prints. If all you want are digital images, or you do not want wallet-sized prints but every package has them, discuss this with the photographer and ask for a lower price to omit these items.

  5. Step 5

Negotiate. If the photographer is out of your budget but you love her work, tell her what you can afford and ask what she can provide in that price range.

  6. Step 6

Look for a talented student at your local art school. Meet with the dean and let him know you're looking for a talented, responsible student to shoot your event and at what price. Ask for a recommendation.

Tips & Warnings
  • Craigslist is a great place to find affordable, budding photographers. Check the artists and creative services sections for listings.
  • Sign a detailed contract spelling out the total cost, what that price gets you, and any additional fees that could be budget busters.
  • If you are looking for a photographer for your wedding or another celebration, avoid asking close friends or family members to do the job as a gift. They will not be able to enjoy themselves as a guest if they are truly focused on your photos, and there is too much risk of bad blood if the pictures do not meet your expectations.
