Many people use cellphone and smartphone SMS text messaging for instant communication with friends, family and co-workers. The Apple iPhone's text message client displays a preview of received text messages on the display screen each time it receives a new message. If you leave your iPhone on a desk or table during business or social meetings, other people may be tempted to sneak a peek at your messages when they flash up on the phone's display screen. You can prevent this by changing the message preview options in the iPhone's "Settings" menu.

Skill level:

  1. 1

Tap the "Settings" icon on the iPhone home screen.

  2. 2

Select "Messages" from the "Settings" menu screen.

  3. 3

Find the "Show Preview" option on the "Messages" menu screen.

  4. 4

Slide the tab beside "Show Preview" from the "On" to the "Off" position. This stops the iPhone from displaying received text messages in a pop-up box on the home screen.

  5. 5

Exit the "Settings" menu by pushing the "Home" button under the iPhone display screen.

Tips and warnings

  • Although switching off the "Show Preview" option stops the iPhone from displaying the content of text messages on the display screen, the iPhone will continue to display an alert when a new message arrives. You can open the message to read the contents by tapping the alert on the home screen.
