MapSource is map software for Garmin GPS devices manufactured by Garmin. One of the advantages of using MapSource is that PC users can export customised map data from MapSource to any Garmin device. In addition, one of the easiest ways to update maps in Garmin GPS devices is by exporting an entire regional map from MapSource to a Garmin device. Downloading MapSource maps to Garmin devices requires a compatible USB/serial cable that connects a Garmin device to a PC. Typically, Garmin devices come with a USB/serial cable.

Instructions

  1. 1

Open your MapSource software on your PC and then use the "Map Tool" to select the map data you would like to export to your Garmin device. To use the "Map Tool," according to GPSFileDepot.com, choose the segments you want to download by dragging selection boxes on the map; the selected areas will turn a pink colour.

  2. 2

Connect the USB/serial cable that originally came with your Garmin device to your PC running the MapSource software. Be sure to use a Garmin-compatible USB/serial cable--not all USB cables are compatible with Garmin devices.

  3. 3

Download your selected MapSource map to your Garmin device by clicking on the "Send to Device" button, selecting the "Find Device" button, and then clicking on the "Send" button.

The MapSource data you selected will be exported to your connected Garmin device. Upon successfully exporting the data, you should get the following message: "The data has been successfully sent."
