How to Put Smileys in Web-Based Email

Sometimes, when writing emails, you want to express more than text can convey. Over the years, this trend led to the creation of emoticons for web writing. An emoticon (emotion + icon) is a series of letters and/or punctuation that creates faces with different expressions. When you compose an email using a web-based application, there are several ways to add an emoticon.

Instructions

    Using Text

  1. Step 1

    Use a colon, hyphen and parenthesis to create a smiley face. :-)

  2. Step 2

    Use a colon and parenthesis to make a smaller smiley face. :)

  3. Step 3

    Use a semicolon, hyphen and parenthesis to make a winking smiley face. ;-)

  4. Step 4

    Use a colon, hyphen and D to create a laughing smiley face. :-D

  5. Step 5

    Use a colon, hyphen and P to create a smiley face with its tongue sticking out. :-P

  6. Using the Toolbar

  7. Step 1

    Many web-based email providers (GMail, Yahoo, Hotmail) include the option to embed graphic emoticons into your email. To get started, compose a new email.

  8. Step 2

    Above the body of the email, you will see an editing toolbar. Click the smiley face that appears on the toolbar.

  9. Step 3

    A drop-down menu will appear with all of the emoticons that you can embed in your email. Click on an emoticon to embed it into the email.

  10. Step 4

    Embed as many emoticons as you like. When you are done writing the email, click send.
