The Pope is revered because he's the head of the Catholic Church and because he is considered to be holy. Pope John Paul was best known for his willingness to meet with the public, but since his passing and the induction of the new Pope, the rules for meeting the Pope have changed. Use these steps to find the easiest way to meet him and maybe be blessed.

Skill level:

  1. 1

Travel to Rome for a papal audience with the Pope. Although the Pope does travel around the world at times, he is normally on a very tight schedule and only meets with guests he's there to visit. He can be seen by the general public, but the chance of meeting him there is small. Your best bet is to travel to Rome where he regularly sees a papal audience on Wednesday mornings.

  2. 2

Decide if you are willing to meet the Pope in a general audience or if you are likely to be granted a private audience. These are generally reserved for more prominent people of all religious backgrounds and the process needs to begin with your priest submitting a letter of application to the North American College requesting a private meeting. If this does not describe you, a letter from your priest or bishop may be able to get you general audience tickets in a section closer to the Pope or on the aisle where he may pass by.

  3. 3

Contact The Church of Saint Susanna for tickets, which are free. You can request tickets from their website or through email. You can also call Prefettura della Casa Pontificia at (39) 06 69883114 and request tickets or fax them at (39) 06 69885863.

  4. 4

Plan a trip to Rome shortly after being married to be blessed by the Pope. There is a special section for newlyweds to sit and although the practice of having the Pope bless individual couples has been discontinued, he will still give a general blessing over everyone sitting in that section. You must be married less than two months and have your marriage certificate with you when you pick up your tickets.

  5. 5

Wear the correct attire when you meet the Pope to get blessed. For newlyweds, they should be in their full wedding garments. All other women should wear a dark dress with long sleeves and a conservative neckline and if possible cover their heads. Men should wear conservative, dark business attire.

  6. 6

Kneel and kiss the ring of the Pope if you are lucky enough to meet him personally to get blessed.

Tips and warnings

  • Ticket requests must be made at least a week in advance, but made no more than 10 weeks in advance.
