Feathered hair was one of the most popular hairstyles during the late 1970s and early 1980s. At that time, male and female celebrities, such as Farrah Fawcett, Eric Idle, and Don Johnson, wore their hair feathered. To do a feathered hairstyle, grow your hair to at least chin-length level, part it in the middle or side, and curl the front section of the hair outward. This style gives the hair volume, personality, bounce, and thickness.

  1. 1

Make sure your hair is long enough. The feathered hairstyle requires, at the minimum, chin-length hair. Since you will use a large hair roller or curling iron, you will need to have enough hair to wrap around the roller or curling iron. If your hair is not long enough but you still want to feather it, consider adding extensions to your hair.

  2. 2

Start with clean hair. To create the feathered hairstyle, you will need hairspray, moose, and other hair products. To ensure that the products already in your hair do not interfere with the styling products, wash your hair beforehand. Washing your hair beforehand will also remove any excess oils, which weigh the hair down and keep it from having volume.

  3. 3

Part your hair in the middle or on the side. You do not have to part it until it reaches the back section of the hair. Instead, you can just part it two or three inches before you reach the crown of your head. Make sure that the part is not crooked.

  4. 4

Take a section of your hair that is about two inches wide. Wrap the ends of that section around a curling iron with a large diameter. It is important to use a curling iron with a large diameter rod because the larger the rod of the curling iron, the larger your curl will be. Since feathered hair is voluminous, it requires big curls. If you do not want to use heat, use large hair rollers. To use the rollers, wash and condition your hair beforehand. Wrap a damp two to three inch section of your hair around the rollers. Hold the rollers in place with a hair clip. As your hair dries, it will start to curl.

Tips and warnings

  • To help the hairstyle last longer and have more volume, use moose when the hair is still wet. When you are done, spray hairspray on your hair to help maintain the feathered style.
