How to Replace a Front Fork Seal on a Honda

Dirt bikes, cruisers, customs, and street bikes all need different sizes and types of seals on their forks. Seals keep the oil inside the forks, ensuring that the forks work properly. Honda provides may different types of seals for their motorcycles, no matter what type you may be riding. If your motorcycle's forks don't work properly, you are in danger of sustaining serious damage to your bike and, more importantly, to yourself. The process of changing a front fork seal is the same for just about every Honda motorcycle on the market.

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Remove the nut from the front wheel using the crescent wrench. Use the hammer to hammer out the wheel axle from the forks and tire. You can't remove the wheel until you have removed the axle.

  2. Step 2

Loosen the securing nut that connects the fork to the handle bar using the crescent wrench, then slide the fork out of its housing. Do not take the securing nut completely off of the connector.

  3. Step 3

Place the fork into the oil pan, bottom-side down, and let it drain for five minutes into the oil pan.

  4. Step 4

Tighten the drain nuts and remove the seal with a screwdriver, then slide the seal off the fork. Slide the new seal onto the fork and press into place firmly.

  5. Step 5

Fill the fork with the recommended oil amount, as suggested in the owner's manual. Replace the fork and the wheel to the frame by completing the steps above in reverse order.
