How to Change Honda Fork Seals

Honda motorcycles are dependable and fun recreational vehicles. Most if not all of Honda motorcycles are equipped with shock-absorbing front forks. The forks are filled with oil and equipped with a fork seal that keeps the oil from leaking out. Over time, the fork seals can wear out and begin leaking. If this takes place, the seals should be replaced as soon as possible so as to avoid damage to any other parts of the fork. Replacing the fork seals on a Honda motorcycle is fairly simple and can be done by most home mechanics.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Use the Allen wrench to loosen and remove the oil drain bolt on the bottom of each fork and allow the fork oil to drain into the catch pan. Replace the drain plug bolt and then use the jack placed under the motor to jack the front wheel of the motorcycle up off the ground.

  2. Step 2

Use the box-end wrenches to remove the axle bolts on either side of the wheel and remove it from the forks. Use the screwdriver to remove any shrouding covering the top of the triple crown mount holding the fork in place. Use a box-end wrench to loosen the triple crown mounting bolts. Slide the form arms out of the triple crown mount and use the circlip pliers to remove the cylindrical circlip around each of the fork tubes.

  3. Step 3

Slide the fork tubes up out of the fork body and use the needle-nose pliers to remove the fork seals. Spread fork oil on the new seals, fill the fork tubes with oil and slide the new seals into place on the fork tubes. Slide the fork tubes back into the fork bodies and then reinstall the circlips.

  4. Step 4

Slide the forks back up into the triple crown mount and tighten down the mounting bolts. Reinstall any shrouding you removed with the Phillips screwdriver and then slide the wheel and axle back into place. Tighten down the axle bolts and lower the bike off of the jack.

Tips & Warnings
  • Make sure to avoid getting dirt in the forks when you are performing this procedure, as this could damage the fork seals and/or forks.
