A GIF animation consists of a number of individual picture files that play out one after the other. You can convert a GIF animation to the AVI video format on a Mac by using the QuickTime Pro program. The procedure for converting the GIF animation takes very little time and provides an AVI video file usable in video and editing programs that can not display GIF animations.

Download and install the free Mac version of the QuickTime Player program from the website listed in the "Resources" section of this article. You must also purchase a registration code for changing the QuickTime Player into QuickTime Pro from the same website.
Run the QuickTime Player. Select "QuickTime" and then "Registration" from the drop-down menus at the top of the screen. Enter the registration code bought for QuickTime Pro into the column next to the "Registration code" tab in the window that appears. Enter your name in the column next to the "Name" tab. Press the red button at the upper left corner to close the window, then quit the QuickTime Player program.
Run QuickTime Pro. Use the mouse to drag the GIF animation file into the QuickTime icon that is on the desktop or in the dock to the lower left area of the screen. Wait as the GIF animation file loads into QuickTime Pro.
Go to "File" and select "Export" from the drop-down menu. Select "Movie to AVI" from the drop-down menu next to "Export" in the window that appears. Provide a name for the AVI file in the top column of the window.
Select "Animation" from the drop-down menu below "Movie to AVI". Click on the "Options" button to open a new window. Check the "Video" box in the new window. Click on the "Settings" button to open another window. Select "Best" from the drop-down menu next to "Frames per second".
Move the slider under the "Quality" tab to "Best". Close the window by clicking on "OK", then close the window that appears beneath it by clicking on "OK" again. Press the "Save" button at the bottom of the window that remains on the screen. Wait as the GIF animation is converted to an AVI video file and saved to the Mac's hard drive.
Tips and warnings
- Experiment with selecting different numbers from the drop-down menu next to "Frames per second" rather than going with "Best". Different speeds will create an AVI video file that will appear to be moving faster or slower.
- The video quality of the AVI video file made from the GIF animation will improve the GIF's original resolution.
