Insulin is a hormone produced by the pancreas which helps regulate the amount of glucose in the blood by moving it to cells that use it for energy. Glucose is a sugar that comes from the carbohydrates we eat. Everybody needs a certain amount of glucose to provide energy, but when the pancreas does not produce enough insulin (as in Type 1 Diabetes) or react to it properly (as in Type 2 Diabetes), glucose accumulates in the bloodstream and can cause serious health problems. Some Diabetics are able to control blood sugar with diet and exercise, but others must take insulin injections to keep blood sugar within a normal range. The cost of insulin varies at pharmacies, but there are a few ways to purchase it at a lower cost.

How to buy insulin for very low prices

  1. 1

Buy in volume. Ask your physician to write a 3-month prescription for your insulin instead of a 30-day prescription. Most insurance prescription plans will require you to pay a co-payment each time you get a prescription filled. If your prescription is for 3 months, you may be able to get a 3-month supply of insulin for just one co-pay.

  2. 2

Use generics. Several name-brands of insulin are available in generic brands as well; the name-brands Humulin R and Humulin N are sold generically as Novolin R and Novolin N, for example. The generic brands often cost £13 less than name-brands for a 30-day supply. If the type of insulin you use is not available in a generic brand, talk to your doctor about changing to a brand that is.

  3. 3

Get samples. Ask your doctor if he can give you samples of insulin. Many drug company representatives visit doctors' offices regularly, dropping off samples of medications doctors may can pass on to their patients.

  4. 4

Apply for discounts. Most of the major drug companies offer discounts or free medications to patients who could not otherwise afford the medications. As your doctor to give you applications for these plans (both financial and medical statements are required). If you are approved, your free or discounted medication can be shipped directly to your home or to your physician's office.
