An emerald green dress is a striking garment in itself. Emerald green is a dramatic colour that is sure to draw attention. The dress should be the focal point of your ensemble. Any accessories you choose to wear with it should serve only as accents and complements.

Instructions

  1. 1

Consider referencing the colour wheel as a starting point. This may sound quite technical, but the wheel can be immensely useful when it comes to solving any visual or design dilemma. It organises colours based on how they complement each other. For instance, green and red are located across from each other on the colour wheel because red complements green.

Writer Leatrice Eismen advises that “when the intensity of one or both of the (complementary colours) is muted, the combination is much easier on the eyes." (Eisman, 2007, p. 43). Choose jewellery in muted red or rose shades. A pair of drop earrings in this colour family would be a good choice. If your dress has a simple neckline, a necklace in rose quartz or one with a rose-coloured stone pendant is another option.

  3. 3

Decide on your footwear. Since emerald green is already a bold colour, a pair of shoes in neutrals (beige, black, white and grey) or even a darker shade of green would work well. These colours will make your emerald green dress stand out more. A pair of peep-toe heels in a cool champagne colour or even delicate strappy sandals in silver would work very well.

  4. 4

If you want to go the other way, you can add more drama by going monochromatic. In place of complementary colours, wear accessories in different shades of green. Keep in mind that lighter shades of colour draw more attention than darker shades. Jade jewellery will highlight your face, while shoes in a rich, deep green will draw more attention to your upper body and facial area.

Tips and warnings

  • For an example of a successful ensemble with an emerald green dress as its centre point, check out the 2007 film, "Atonement," which features actress Keira Knightley’s character wearing an emerald green evening dress. She wears it with accessories in diamonds and white gold, including a comb, cuff and delicate gold shoes. The overall effect is tasteful. The neutral hue in the white gold only further highlights the stunning green dress.
