Stainable wood filler is an essential tool to use when working with solid wood furniture, cabinetry, flooring or other finishable wood products. Wood filler fills dents, cracks, holes, knots and other blemishes found in real wood products. The filler is made with real wood to help any colour of stain blend evenly with the surrounding solid wood. If a large hole is filled with wood filler on a main, highly visible surface on a finished solid wood product, and the wood filler does not take the stain colour well, the wood filler will become a major blemish against the wood.
Scoop a small amount of stainable wood filler out of the can with a small putty knife, and spread it over the hole, gap or crack in the wood. Fill all other holes in the same manner, pressing the wood filler into the hole until you have completely filled the void. Allow the wood filler to dry completely before moving on to step 2.
Apply a piece of 150-grit sandpaper to an electric palm sander, and run the sander over the wood surface, sanding in the direction of the grain pattern. The sander will prevent the sandpaper from causing scratches that would become apparent when you apply the stain to the wood.
Remove the saw dust by blowing the wood off with compressed air. Wipe the wood off with a tack cloth. Shake the dust off the tack cloth often to avoid spreading the saw dust from one place to another.
Shake a can of stain well for about two minutes before opening it. Apply the wood stain with a foam brush. Foam brushes offer a degree of control not found with cloth rags, and you will waste less stain. Allow the stain to sit on the surface of the wood to allow for maximum penetration into the wood. Wipe excess stain off the wood with a cloth rag. Allow the stain to dry for the recommended amount of time stated on the stain can.
Reapply a second coat of stain over filled areas if the colour difference between the filler and the wood is obvious. This is not a common problem.
