How to Remove Tempo Rear Shocks

The Ford Tempo uses rear shock absorbers to dampen the suspension from rough terrain. These shocks are mounted between the body and suspension, and also help keep the vehicle stable at high speeds. The shocks can wear out and require replacement, and the average backyard mechanic can remove the pair of rear shocks in a Tempo in about 30 minutes.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Support the rear frame rail near the shock with the floor jack head, and raise the head by pumping the lever until it applies just a little positive pressure on the frame of the car. The car does not need to be lifted, only supported.

  2. Step 2

Loosen the lower shock mount nut by turning it counterclockwise. Do not remove it completely.

  3. Step 3

Loosen the upper mount bolts, which are vertically mounted with a shock eyelet mount adapter, by turning the bolts counterclockwise. Place the bolts aside for reuse.

  4. Step 4

Remove the lower shock mount nut and slide the bottom eyelet from the shock mount bolt. With the top of the shock disconnected, the bottom mount should slide freely off of the bolt.

  5. Step 5

Slide the entire shock assembly down, then away from the car. Turn the floor jack pressure screw counterclockwise and remove it from the frame rail.

  6. Step 6

Repeat the entire process on the opposite side shock.

Tips & Warnings
  • Removing the wheel will give easier access to the shock absorber mounts.
  • Do not drive the Tempo without rear shocks, replace them before operating the vehicle.
