If you are planning a tropical paradise themed wedding or are having your wedding in a tropical location, you may want the wedding and reception to be surrounded with beautiful island favours such as vibrant flowers and fresh fruit. One great way to incorporate a tropical paradise theme into a wedding is to make decorative palm trees out of fresh fruit. The process is relatively simple while creating an awe-inspiring element to your paradise wedding.

Skill level:

Things you need

  • 6 large pineapples
  • Two 1/2-inch dowels
  • Silk palm leaves

  • Fresh fruit

  1. 1

Cut the leafy end off of a large pineapple. Try to leave the cut surface as flat and wide as possible. Then cut the pineapple horizontally along the bottom, again leaving the cut surface flat enough to rest easily on a table without tipping over. Repeat this process with five more large pineapples. These pineapples will make up the base for you to have two matching trees.

  2. 2

Stack three pineapples on top of each other. Trim as necessary, so the pineapples sit as stably as possible when balanced on top of each other. Measure the height of your pineapple stack, and cut a dowel to approximately two inches smaller than this length. Insert your dowel into the centre of your top pineapple, pushing it all the way through to the bottom of your pineapple. This will add extra support for your tree. Repeat with your remaining three pineapples to create your second tree.

  3. 3

Twist bits of wire to the ends of your silk palm leaves. Both the wire and palm leaves can be purchased at most art and hobby stores. You will need to cut enough wire to support the weight of each individual palm leaf as well as to be inserted into the top of the pineapple at least 2 inches deep. Insert your palm leaves into each pineapple trunk until you have a full and leafy top to your tree. Any exposed wire can be covered with green yarn if desired.

  4. 4

Surround your pineapple palm trees with a large platter of fresh cut fruit and edible flowers such as hibiscus, water lilies or malva petals. For health reasons, make sure the flowers have been grown organically without any dangerous pesticides or herbicides. Use fruits such as pineapple, coconut, strawberries, grapes, kiwifruit, starfruit, banana slices and melons to create a beautiful and vibrant display, as well as anchor your pineapple palm trees to a serving table. Have serving spoons and plates close by, so your guests can help themselves to the lovely assortment.
