How to spray tan hands & feet

Sunless tanning is a healthy, burn-free way of getting a great full-body glow. It does, however, have a few inherent problems. The chemicals in a spray tan only create a natural-looking tan when applied to smooth, even skin. The skin on your hands and feet is the some of the thickest, roughest and most wrinkled on your body, so these places are trickiest. If you're not careful, they can end up looking like they've been caked in dirt, not tanned.

    Exfoliate using a salt scrub or a PedEgg. The best thing you can do to prevent that caked-dirt look is clear all the dead skin off your hands and feet before tanning. Scrub especially hard on your knuckles, where the skin is particularly thick.

    Apply cream to your cuticles and nails. If you're at a salon, they should provide a barrier cream, but if you're at home a thick lotion or body butter will work fine. This will keep the spray from adhering to cuticles, where it would otherwise gather and look like dirt. Be careful not to smudge the cream too far from your nails, or you'll end up with blotches.

    Position your hands and feet so that the tanning spray is applied evenly. Your hands should be bent in a claw-like shape and your toes should be spread. The object is to try to stretch out those folds of skin on your knuckles and keep your toes from touching.

    Use a nail file on spots that have come out too dark. This will slough off the top layer of skin and lighten the tan.
