Fur hats have always been a fashion statement, but animal rights activitsts have knocked the glamour out of fur in recent decades. You can be a part of fashion history with your own fur hat. Better yet, you can make a pillbox hat with faux fur that looks so realistic it'll look like the real thing.

Instructions

  1. 1

Measure your head with a measuring tape. Measure around your head from the middle of your forehead and just above your ears.

  2. 2

Cut open a paper bag so that it becomes one large piece of paper. Make a pattern for the pillbox hat. You need two pieces: the band and the crown. Make the band 11.2 to 12.5 cm (4 1/2 to 5 inches) wide and 1.2 cm (1/2 inch) longer than the measurement of your head. Cut an oval for the crown that has a circumference that matches the circumference of your head plus 1,2 cm (1/2 inch).

  3. 3

Lay the faux fur of your choice on the worktable and fold it so that the right sides are together. Lay the pattern for the band on the edge of the fold and pin it in place. Trace around it with tailor's chalk and add 1.2 cm (1/2 inch) seam allowance on the top and sides. Cut it out.

  4. 4

Open the faux fur and place it on the table face down and lay the lining on top of it. Set the pattern piece on top of the fabric and pin it in place. Trace around it with tailor's chalk and add 1.2 cm (1/2 inch) for seam allowance.

  5. 5

Pin the band together, right side to right side, so it will form one continuous piece. Sew it together then turn the band right side out. Pin the crown to the unfinished edges of the band right side to right side. Sew the two pieces together. Turn the hat right side out.

  6. 6

Press the edges of the lining down along the seam allowance. Pin the lining inside the faux fur hat so that the seams on the inside are hidden. Hand sew it in place.
