How to block unwanted calls from your land line

Receiving telephone calls from individuals you don't want to talk to can be a nuisance. These calls can range from bill collectors and telemarketers to old boyfriends. The telephone companies have not left you completely powerless. By paying an extra monthly fee, you can subscribe to services that will allow you to block calls from people you know as well as those you don't.

To block calls from specific people, ask your local phone company to add a "Call Blocking" feature to your land line service. It is likely you will have to pay a small monthly fee to activate the call blocking feature.

Press the code on your telephone keypad to activate the call blocking feature. This code should be given to you when you activate the feature with the telephone company representative. The code will vary by telephone company.

Follow the prompts to enter the telephone numbers you wish to block.

To automatically block anonymous calls, ask your local phone company to add the "Privacy Director" or "Privacy Manager" feature to your land line service. Generally, you will be assessed a monthly fee for this feature.

Dial the number on your telephone keypad to activate privacy director. This number will vary by telephone company. Upon activation, anyone calling you from an unknown number will not be able to reach you. Instead the party will be redirected to your voicemail.
