More than 45 million computers are thrown out each year, according to the Environmental Protection Agency. Technically, you can throw out unwanted laptop computers in the municipal waste system, but recycling laptops is much more environmentally friendly.

The Facts

Local community hazardous waste programs almost always offer to take unwanted laptops, according to the EPA. Major electronics retailers, such as Best Buy and Dell, also have programs that recycle old electronics.

There is a good chance that you will know somebody or some charitable organisation that can use an old laptop or can give it to a family that needs one.

No matter where or how you dispose of your computer, make sure to use a disk-wiping program to eliminate any traces of sensitive data from the hard drive. You also can physically destroy the drive.
