Instead of paying a printing company to make your next birthday sign, consider making a free banner using a word processing program. Microsoft Office allows you to create a birthday banner with their free templates. While Microsoft Office has customised each template with a theme, you can customise the banner with your own colours, pictures and messages. Create your own banner with a special birthday message for your next party.

Instructions

  1. 1

Open up Microsoft Word. Click on the "Office Button" located in the upper left corner of the screen. Open up a new document.

  2. 2

Scroll down to the bottom of the "New Document" box. Select "More Categories," and click on the "Banners" list of options.

  3. 3

Choose the "Happy Birthday" banner design. Select the "Download" or "Create" button located in the bottom right corner.

  4. 4

Select the "Page Layout" tab to change the page size. It is not necessary to change the page size if you are using standard paper, but if your paper is not 8 ½ by 11 inches you will need to adjust the size of the pages. Leave the margin settings alone when you change the page layout. The margins leave enough room for you to tape the banner together.

  5. 5

Open the "Format" tab located on the menu bar. You can change the colour scheme, and additional details about the banner to make it stand out at the party.

  6. 6

Change the font by opening the "Home" tab. You will be able to change the font style, colour and size.

  7. 7

Replace the text with your own personal birthday message. Adjust these accordingly to match the theme of your birthday party.

  8. 8

Add clip art or pictures to the banner. Under the "Insert" tab you have the option to add a picture from your computer, or to insert a clip art image using the search feature and clip art provided by Microsoft Word. Type keywords such as "birthday," "party" or "celebration" into the search box.

  9. 9

Select the "Office Button" and select "Save." Once you save your birthday banner, you can safely print your creation.

  10. 10

Open the "Office Button" menu selection again. Choose "Print" from the options, and print your banner. Once the banner prints, you can tape the pieces of paper together to create your free banner. Overlap each piece of paper, and attach a piece of tape either to the front or back of the banner pages.
