Hewlett Packard laptop computers feature the functionality of a desktop computer in regard to their keyboards. However, because of size limitations, some laptops feature special keys that serve specific functions. Using these particular keys requires only the development of some new keyboard habits.
Locate and press the "fn" button. With many HP laptops, the "fn" button is encircled.
Find the buttons that have smaller icons in squares. These are your function buttons, many of which are specific to HP machines.
Hold down the "fn" button while pressing the function keys to select the proper button.
Depending on the HP laptop, function buttons include: start/stop and pause for video and music playback, a "quick launch" button for Internet browsers, and a help button.
