How to Change Exhaust Tail Pipes on a Volkswagen Beetle

Written by mark o'brien | 13/05/2017

The standard exhaust pipe on a Volkswagen Beetle car is not the coolest looking. It is just a flat steel colour that protrudes out of the back of the muffler. The tail pipe is connected to the muffler by three set screws. This pipe is called a tip, and you can purchase a variety of tips at most car part stores. There are bigger diameter tips, chrome tips and many other styles. The tips are a standard size, so just purchase a style you like, remove the current tip from your Volkswagen Beetle and screw on the new one.

Lay under the rear of your Volkswagen Beetle. Position yourself so you are within an arm's reach of the exhaust tip.

Light the propane torch. Heat the three set screws on your old exhaust tip. The three set screws will be at the rear of the exhaust tip, just before the muffler body. Hold the flame 1/2 inch away from each set screw. Rotate the flame around each set screw for 1 to 2 minutes. This will help break free any rust so the old pipe will come off with ease.

Remove the three set screws holding the old exhaust tip on. Turn the wrench counterclockwise. Loosen each set screw completely (set screws don't come completely off, they just unscrew about 1/4 inch).

Firmly grab the old tail pipe tip and pull it off. Clean the pipe connection where the old exhaust tip was with the steel wool. Do this to prevent rust on the new tip you are going to install.

Slide the new tip onto the pipe protruding from the muffler.

Screw each set screw clockwise with the set screw wrench until all three are tight and the new tip is in place.
