Kids love parties, but sometimes the decorations can put a dent in anyone's party budget. An inexpensive decoration idea is to make a single large or several small disco balls to hang for the festivities. Children can even get involved in the process, but adult supervision will be required. These decorations can be recycled for your next children's party or hung in their rooms later. They are sure to love the colourful additions to their party.

  1. 1

Lay newspaper on a craft table to assemble your disco ball. Cut your CD pieces. These pieces will be used as your reflective mirrors. Take your scissors and, using your thumb and forefinger to grasp the CD in the centre, begin cutting from the outer edge to the middle. Continue this pattern, leaving a 1/8- to 1/4-inch space in between each cut. Carefully pop these strips off of the CD centre. Cut these strips into squares and set aside in a small basket or dish to use later.

  2. 2

Attach your hanger to the disco ball. Straighten one end of a paper clip. Place a dot of hot glue on the styrofoam ball. While it is still hot, push the straightened end of the paper clip through the ball so that only the curved end shows.

  3. 3

Attach the pieces of the CD to the styrofoam ball. Starting at the top of the styrofoam ball, near the hanger, place a dab of hot glue. Place a small square of the CD onto the glue using the tweezers so you don't burn your hand. Repeat this process around the top centre of the ball, then work your way downward, row by row until you are finished.

  4. 4

Once the ball has been completed and the glue has cooled, attach the fishing line. Cut a 6- to 9-inch piece of fishing line and tie it to the end of the paper clip. Tape it to the ceiling with clear tape. If you have an acoustical ceiling, you can put the straight end of another paper clip directly into the ceiling tile and tie the other end of the fishing line around it and hang the ball.

  5. 5

Repeat this process on the other balls or hang a single ball for your party. Consider hanging coloured Christmas lights around the ceiling. The reflection off of the disco balls will add a prism effect.
