How to Calculate the Number of Days Left Until Retirement

Updated November 21, 2016

If you are planning your retirement, it can be fun to know exactly how many days of work you have left. You can find out with a few calculations. If you want to retire with full Social Security benefits, visit the U.S. government's Retirement Age site to find out how old you need to be to receive these benefits when you stop working.

Decide when you are going to retire. Select an exact date.

Count the number of months you will work until your retirement date. Each year has 12 months, so if you are going to work for exactly three more years, for example, that's 36 months.

Multiply the number of months by 20, the number of working days in a month. Subtract any days that you will take as holidays between now and your final day of work. The result is the number of days you have until you can retire.
