How to Use Antibiotics for Sinusitis

Sinusitis (also called a sinus infection) is the inflammation of the sinus cavities. Sinus infection symptoms can range from nasal congestion to migraine headache. It may also take the form of a toothache. A sinus infection can be caused by physical trauma, allergies or bacterial infection. Sinus infection that is caused by bacteria is often treated through prescription antibiotics. To treat sinus infection symptoms with prescription antibiotics, you have to start with a visit to your doctor.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Talk to your doctor. Antibiotics are only available through prescription for a licensed physician. Explain your symptoms of sinusitis and allow your doctor to examine your nasal and sinus passages. Your doctor may prescribe an antibiotic based on your symptoms or he may take a fluid sample to start a bacterial culture. A bacterial culture will allow the particular bacteria causing your sinusitis to be identified. This makes it much easier to choose which type of antibiotic would be best suited to treat the infection.

  2. Step 2

Inform your doctor of any drug allergies you may have. You should also disclose all prescription and over-the-counter medication you are taking. Chronic conditions should be discussed too. This will help your doctor avoid prescribing medication that may cause an allergic reaction, interact with other drugs or adversely affect your other health conditions.

  3. Step 3

Follow both your doctor's directions and the manufacturer's directions. Keep the prescription antibiotics away from excessive light and moisture. You will start see an improvement in your sinus infection symptoms after a few days on prescription antibiotics, but continue to take the prescription until it is gone.

  4. Step 4

Take your prescription antibiotics at regular time intervals to keep a constant level of medicine in your body. If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you notice unless your next dose is within the hour. In that case, just take the next dose.

  5. Step 5

Monitor your side effects of the prescription antibiotics and discuss them with your doctor. If any of them increase over time or become unbearable, contact your doctor about discontinuing or changing your prescription. If your face, tongue or throat starts to swell or you have trouble breathing, you could be having an allergic reaction to the prescription medication. Seek emergency medical help immediately.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you do not see an improvement in your sinus infection symptoms after you have taken all your prescription antibiotics, you should see your doctor. You may have developed complications to your sinus infection.
  • Only take antibiotics that have prescribed to you by a licensed physician. Do not administer or share antibiotics with others. Doing so can be both dangerous and illegal.
