A ladies brim hat makes a wonderful Christmas gift for the hat lover in your life. If you are an advanced knitter, you can make this ladies brim hat. You need to know how to knit in the round and how to increase. This hat is knitted with two strands of yarn together.

Felting the hat gives a smoother look. Wool yarn felts very well. Felting the hat is optional.

  • Set of size 11 US double point needles
  • 16-inch size 11 US circular needle
  • 227gr knitting worsted weight wool

Instructions

    Knitting the Crown

  1. 1

    Using double pointed needles and two strands of wool, cast on 6 stitches. Join, being careful not to twist.

    Knit every stitch around.

    Increase in each stitch around by knitting into the back and the front of each stitch. You will have 12 stitches. Repeat step 2 twice to create 24 stitches.

    Knitting the Head

    Knitting the Brim

    Increase 15 stitches evenly throughout the round. You will have 100 stitches. Knit every stitch to the end of the round and repeat this round for two inches. The project will measure 11 inches from the cast-on edge.

    Felting the Hat

    Wash the hat in the clothes-washer in hot water with a little soap and some dark blue jeans until it has shrunk to the size you want.

    Towel dry the hat and put it on your head to shape. Leave the hat on your head for a couple of minutes to shape.

    Lay the hat on a flat surface to keep the brim flat. Allow it to dry for 2 days. You can place the hat on your head for a couple of minutes periodically throughout the 2 days to ensure proper shaping.

Tips and warnings

  • Shape the brim as it dries. You can have a flat brim or a slightly rolled brim.
  • If you cast off your stitches too tightly, the brim will not lie flat.
  • Do not felt your hat with shedding materials such as terry towels.
