How to Make an Image Background Transparent in Paint

Updated February 21, 2017

How to create a transparent background in Paint is not apparent even to regular users of this software. In fact, this feature is an option when using the selection tools only and that makes it a hard feature to find, but once you understand how it works, you can make any background or just certain background elements transparent in your image.

Open Paint on your computer by left-clicking the "Start" menu, hovering your mouse over "All Programs," left-clicking "Accessories" and selecting "Paint" from the menu.

Open the image that you want to make transparent by left-clicking "File" in the top toolbar, left-clicking "Open," navigating to the image and clicking "Open" in the dialog box. The image will appear for editing in Paint.

Use the "Free-Form Select" to select only an area of the image to make transparent. Use "Select" to select a rectangular area or the entire image. The option to make the background solid or transparent then appears in the "Options" box to the left of your work area.

Select the second icon in the "Options" box to make the selected area transparent.

Left-click "File," select "Save As" from the drop down menu. The "Save As" dialog box appears.

Select ".gif" or ".png" from the "Save as type" drop down menu, to maintain the transparency in your file. Name your file as desired and left-click "Save." You now have an image with a transparent background.
