Bleach is commonly used as a laundry aid. It disinfects and removes certain stains. Bleach stains themselves, however, are difficult to remove. While bleach may be beneficial when a small amount is added to laundry, it can be detrimental when applied directly to fabric at full strength. Direct application may cause streaking, discolouration, or complete pigment loss. When bleach spills and pools on a garment, holes may appear in the fabric. Check the care instructions of the garment before attempting to remove a stain. Stain removal efforts may be a last resort in salvaging a garment.

  1. 1

Add one tbsp of sodium thiosulfate to one cup of warm water.

  2. 2

Saturate a cloth with the mixture. Use the cloth to blot the solution on the stain.

  3. 3

Blot the stain until the majority of the mixture has transferred to the fabric.

  4. 4

Repeat the application if the stain has not disappeared. Be sure to replace the cloth with a clean one to avoid transferring the bleach back to the fabric.

  5. 5

Clean the garment according to care label instructions when the stain has disappeared.

Tips and warnings

  • Buy Sodium thiosulfate at a photography or pool supply store. It is used in developing traditional film and also used to counteract chlorine bleach. One commercial name is Bleach Stop. If the discolouration is not isolated and the entire garment is yellow, it may be the result of over bleaching. Try a fabric whitener before following the sodium thiosulfate method.
