Comic books have been a part of childhood since the advent of the comic book format in 1934. Many boys and girls have carried their love for comic books into adulthood. The traditional paper and ink comic book doesn't appear to be in any danger of leaving us, but the internet has given rise to a new way to read some of your favourite classic comic books online.

It's easier to find independent and unknown comic books to read online free of charge. However, there are also more well known comics available online for free. For example, The Collins Compendium of Free Comics Online offers over 300 legal brand name comics free of charge (see resources).
Another popular resource is Marvel Comics. Although it is a fee-based site, Marvel also offers weekly free comic reads at their website (see resources). To explore, visit Marvel Digital Comics and scroll down under the heading "This Week's Picks." These are free weekly titles that Marvel puts up to give you a taste of their digital comics. Choose a title and click "Open" to bring the title up on your screen.
Use the arrow on the navigational bar at the bottom of your screen to move through the pages of the comic. Each time you click the arrow, the web-based reader zooms and scrolls you to the section of the page you should be reading next. You can navigate forward and backward through the comic as needed.
Click "Magnify Text" on the right-hand side of the navigational bar if you have trouble reading the text. Your cursor becomes a magnifying glass that you can move over anything you want to magnify. You can manually resize the comic to fit the screen with the "Zoom" slide bar to the left of your screen on the navigational bar. If you want to read in full-screen mode, click the "Full Screen" option next to the "Magnify Text" option. Hit escape to exit full-screen mode.
Visit the Collins Compendium of Free Online Comic Books to read the very rare and collectable version of the first appearance of Superman in Action Comics #1. While the scanned comic is the original, it's not in good shape. While you're there, you can read some classic Avengers, Spiderman, Hulk and X-Men. The site also features "Dark Horse" comics, "Image" comics and "Vertigo" comics.
