How to Use the Bissell Carpet Cleaner

Bissell has been manufacturing cleaning appliances for more than 100 years, including high-quality carpet cleaners. Two popular models of Bissell carpet cleaners are the PROheat and the PowerLifter. Most Bissell carpet cleaners operate similarly with only slight variations in the different models. Operating the Bissell PROheat or PowerLifter can be done by following these steps.

    Bissell PROheat

  1. 1

    Lift the carrying handle to remove the tank from the carpet cleaner. Unlatch and remove the lid and turn the tank over. You will see a built-in measuring cup.

    Pour Bissell cleaning formula to the fill line on the measuring cup. Pour the formula into the bladder. Fill the bladder the remainder of the way with hot tap water and put the tank back into the machine.

    Plug the Bissell carpet cleaner into an outlet. Place the ReadyTools knob into the "Floor Cleaning" position.

    Use your foot to press the power switch button on the back of the machine. This will power on the carpet cleaner.

    Set the heater switch to the "On" position. The heater switch is found on the side of the carpet cleaner. Wait one minute for the heater to warm up.

    Push the handle release lever on the back of the machine using your foot. This lever is located below the water tank.

    Press the spray trigger while simultaneously making a slow pass forward and then backward over an area of carpet. Let go of the spray trigger and make a slow pass forward and then backward over the same area. This will suck up any leftover dirty water.

    Repeat cleaning passes over an area of carpet until the solution being sucked up into the tank looks clean. Continue dry passes over an area until no more water is being sucked up.

    Continue this process over the entire carpet.

    Bissell PowerLifter

  1. 1

    Lay the handle of the carpet cleaner back to access the water tank. Lift up on the carrying handle of the tank to remove it from the base of the machine.

    Carry the tank to the sink and remove the lid. Pour Bissell cleaning formula into the enclosed measuring cup to the indicator line and then pour it into the bladder. Fill the remainder of the bladder with hot tap water. Replace the tank into the bladder.

    Plug the Bissell carpet cleaner into a power outlet and switch the power "On." The power switch is located on the side of the machine.

    Press and hold the spray release trigger while simultaneously making a slow forward then backward pass over an area of carpet. Be sure not to overwet the carpet.

    Release the spray trigger and slowly pass over the same area forward, then backward. This will remove any leftover dirty water.

    Pass over the same area forward then backward without pressing the trigger until no more water is being sucked into the machine.

    Continue this process over the entire carpet.

Tips and warnings

  • Vacuuming the carpet before deep cleaning will prevent the lint trap on the carpet cleaner from clogging prematurely.
