Resetting BMW service lights should be done after the intended service has been completed. On most BMW models, this is a simple procedure. The service lights are reset by using a service light reset tool available from BMW. The tool is connected to to the diagnostic connector, located on the fuse panel in the passenger cabin. BMWs made before 1988 used a 15-pin connector. BMWs after 1987 used a 20-pin connector. Both types of connectors are reset the same way.

Skill level:
Moderately Easy

  1. 1

Remove the fuse panel cover and locate the 15-pin or 20-pin diagnostic connector.

  2. 2

Plug the reset tool into the connector input.

  3. 3

Turn the BMW ignition to the "II" position, but do not crank the engine.

  4. 4

Wait 15 seconds until all of the service lights have been reset. The indicator light on the tool should stop blinking at this point.
