Tape plastic over your car window frame as a quick fix when your window is broken, or you are unable to shut the window. This can be necessary if you find yourself the victim of a burglary, a non-working window switch or a dead car battery. Use this temporary solution until you can obtain a replacement window, battery or repair the switch.

  1. 1

Open the car door. Spread a length of clear, plastic sheeting against the open window frame.

  2. 2

Cut a section of plastic that covers the open window frame, using scissors. Ensure the bottom of the plastic extends a short bit past the bottom of the window frame.

  3. 3

Tear off a short section of duct tape, or cut with scissors. Use the duct tape to tape the top of the plastic to the top of the window frame.

  4. 4

Pull the plastic down tight, and apply a strip of duct tape to the bottom of the plastic, where it meets the inside of the car door. Tightly pull the sides and corners of the plastic to the sides of the window frame, and apply strips of duct tape to anchor the sides of the plastic to the interior door frame. Shut the door.

  5. 5

Cut or break off a longer section of duct tape. Press the duct tape to the upper joint, where the door and the body of the car meet.

  6. 6

Break off or cut sections of duct tape, and place them so that the perimeter of the window is covered, making it watertight and airtight.

Tips and warnings

  • Use sturdy clear trash bags in a fix if no heavy mil plastic sheeting is available.
