Cowboy and cowgirl costumes are among the most popular around Halloween. The boots, gun holster and cowboy hat are all must-haves in a cowboy costume. However, a homemade cowboy vest can add a certain flair to a cowboy costume that you can't get from a store bought costume. Although making your own vest can sound like a difficult process, it's actually rather easy if you have basic sewing skills and a little bit of extra time on your hands.

Skill level:

Things you need

  • Brown T-shirt
  • Fabric scissors
  • Brown thread
  • Leather fringe
  • Buttons
  • Brown fabric

  1. 1

Cut the sleeves and collar off the T-shirt. Cut the front of the T-shirt all the way open right down the middle.

  2. 2

Hem all of the raw edges of the T-shirt, including the arm holes and collar area.

  3. 3

Sew leather fringe all around the bottom of the vest and around each arm hole.

  4. 4

Cut three button holes into the right side of the front opening, spaced evenly apart (about 2 inches apart). Bind the button holes with thread and sew three buttons on the left side of the front opening, directly opposite to the button holes.

  5. 5

Cut out a piece of brown fabric that is 3 inches square. Hem the fabric square all around and sew it onto the top left of the front of the vest as a pocket, leaving the top edge open.
