How to Make an Aerobics Costume for an '80s Party

Aerobics was at the forefront of a surge of interest in health and fitness during the '80s. Jane Fonda was creating aerobics videos, Olivia Newton-John had a hit with the song "Let's Get Physical" and movies such as Fame, Dirty Dancing and Footloose were hitting the big screens. Neon colours, tight leotards and spandex tights were all the rage. Scour thrift shops for suitable items to create your costume.

Things you need

  • High cut leotard
  • Spandex trousers, shorts or tights
  • Belt
  • Loose-fitting off-the-shoulder top
  • Leg warmers
  • Trainers or aerobic shoes
  • Sweat bands
  • Headband

    Team a high-cut leotard with spandex trousers, shorts or tights. Look for items in bright neon colours. Wear a belt in a contrasting colour around your waist over the leotard.

    Add a loosefitting off-the-shoulder top over the leotard. Tie it at the waist on one side. Bold stripes, slogans and neon colours work well.

    Bright-coloured legwarmers make the ideal accessory for this look. Wear trainers or aerobic shoes. Ballet pumps would also work. Add sweatbands on your wrists.

    If you have long hair sweep it up into a high ponytail. Short or mid-length hair can be curled tightly or flicked back in deep flicks. A terrycloth headband is an essential finishing touch, whatever hairstyle you choose.

    Keep make-up bright and fresh, with plenty of eyeliner and lip gloss. Add pink blush to your cheeks for a healthy aerobic glow.
