How to Buy a Kirby Vacuum
Kirby vacuums like this one are sold by authorised distributors.

The Kirby Company has been selling high-end vacuum cleaners for more than 90 years. It does not sell new vacuums online or in retail stores. The only way to buy a new Kirby machine is to deal with an independent distributor. You will get a demonstration in your own home and will have an opportunity to ask questions before deciding to purchase the vacuum. This system ensures that you'll get a new unit covered by a full warranty.

Skill level:
Moderately Easy

  1. 1

Locate an independent Kirby distributor in your area. You can find one by calling the Kirby Company at 1-800-437-7170 or by filling out a form on its website. If you are on the National Do Not Call List, be aware that filling out the form gives Kirby the right to contact you by phone.

  2. 2

Set up an appointment for a demonstration in your home. Kirby distributors sell vacuums by bringing them into your home and cleaning your carpet to demonstrate the machine's power. Your distributor will let you choose a day and time that is convenient. Ask the distributor how long the demonstration will last so you can allow enough time in your schedule.

  3. 3

Prepare a list of questions so you will be ready for the distributor's visit. Visit the Kirby website to familiarise yourself with the products and help you decide what to ask. Typical questions include whether the vacuum cleaner will work well on different floor surfaces, whether it can handle pet hair, how you should maintain it, where you can get replacement supplies, how much they cost, and the length and terms of the warranty.

  4. 4

Decide on any accessories that you may be interested in purchasing. Although Kirby vacuum cleaners come complete for regular vacuuming duties, you can extend their functionality with accessories. If you have hardwood floors, you can get a kit to help you clean it. If most of your floors are carpeted, you may want to purchase the shampooer. If you need to be able to reach high spots or areas under furniture, you may want extensions. You can even get a holder for your attachments. Make a note of attachment prices through other sellers, as you can use this information in your negotiations.

  5. 5

Negotiate the price of the vacuum. If the demonstration solidifies your desire to buy a Kirby vacuum, see whether the distributor is flexible on the price. You may be able to get a discount, especially if you are willing to delay your purchase. Often, if you say that you need to think about it, the distributor will give you a discount for buying it immediately. If you are interested in any accessories, see if the salesperson will match the prices you found in your research.

  6. 6

Read the sales contract before signing it, and get warranty information in writing. If the distributor has made promises that are not in the contract, make sure she writes them down and signs her name to them. If you don't get them in writing, they will not be enforceable. Clarify the return policy in case you are dissatisfied with your vacuum after the distributor leaves.

Tips and warnings

  • Kirby says that you may find Kirby vacuums for sale in retail stores or online. However, these are reconditioned units that are not eligible for the factory warranty. They may be advertised as "new," but a new Kirby vacuum is never sold in any way other than a distributor's home visit.
