How Do I Unplug My Ears?

Different factors contribute to clogged ears: inadequate drainage, pressure, and buildup of ear wax. Clogging can occur suddenly, and when this happens you may have difficulty hearing. Although annoying, clogged ears rarely signal a serious medical condition, and there are several ways to remedy this problem.

Things You'll Need:

  • Medications
  • Warm cloth
  • Chewing gum
  1. Step 1

Take medications to stop the blockage. Oftentimes clogged ears are caused by congestion resulting from sinus problems or allergies. Take allergy or sinus medication to promote drainage and unclog ears.

  2. Step 2

Grab some chewing gum. Pressure in the ears is another common cause of clogging. Chew gum to ease pressure and clear your ears. Swallowing and yawning may also help.

  3. Step 3

Use steam. Steam from a sauna or shower can also remedy clogged ears. Take a hot shower or sit in a steam room for at least 10 minutes.

  4. Step 4

Experiment with a warm compress. Place a wet cloth in the microwave for 30 seconds. Remove the cloth and place it against your ears for several minutes throughout the day. The heat and steam from the cloth helps clear clogged ears.

  5. Step 5

Pop your ears. Attempt to ease pressure by closing your mouth, holding your nose, and blowing hard.

  6. Step 6

If you are unable to relieve clogged ears with home remedies, make a doctor's appointment. A buildup of ear wax can cause clogged ears, in which case a doctor may need to irrigate your ears to remove excess wax. Your doctor may also want to check for other abnormalities.

Tips & Warnings
  • Do not stick cotton swabs or bobby pins into your ear. These objects can cause permanent injury. Take sinus or allergy medication before flying to avoid ear pressure.
  • If left untreated, clogged ears can cause a host of complications such as a ruptured eardrum or chronic nosebleeds.
