At times it can seem more like pets are part of the family than just animals, so when your beloved pet has an accident it can bring reality crashing back down. Pet urine not only stains surfaces in your home, but can create a dreadful smell, which requires immediate attention. If you have a dog that occasionally forgets its manners or can't control its bladder, there are simple proven ways to fix the problem.

- Paper towels
- White vinegar
- Dish soap
- Clean cloth
- Baking soda
- 3% hydrogen peroxide
- Cling film
Blot up as much of the urine as possible with paper towels.
Mix a solution of equal parts white vinegar and water into a spray bottle and add two tablespoons of dish soap.
Spray the affected area with the solution and work it gently into the fibres with a clean cloth.
Allow the area to soak for 10 to 15 minutes.
Cover the area with baking soda to help draw the moisture out and eliminate and residual odours.
Vacuum up the baking soda when the area is dry.

Pour three per cent hydrogen peroxide onto the affected area to cover it.
Soak a clean cloth in the hydrogen peroxide and place it directly onto the area in the wood.
Cover the cloth with cling film and place something on top of it to weight it down, such as a phone book.
Check the progress in an hour. The cloth should begin to discolour as it draws the urine out of the wood. Replace the cloth as needed and repeat until the stain and smell are gone.

Open up doors and windows to ventilate the area and force the bad air out.
Make sure that the area is cleaned thoroughly of any remaining urine that can create more odours. Don't just try to cover the smell as it will come back unless it is tended to immediately.
Cut up an onion and place it in a bowl of water and leave it in the room overnight. In the morning, the smells in the air will be gone.
