There's something about Christmas that inspires a desire to dress up. Kids love to wear Santa and elf hats to school, so take advantage of their festive mood and help them make their own. Among the possibilities are the three Wise Men's crowns, a snowman top hat, a fancy Christmas tree for the top of the head and Santa or elf hats. Creating simple hats out of paper can be the beginning of a great new Christmas classroom activity.

Instructions

  1. 1

Make a Santa hat. For little kids, take a paper plate and make one cut from the edge straight to the centre. Overlap the two cut edges to make a cone and tape or staple in place. Paint or colour the hat red, glue cotton balls around the bottom edge, and one cotton ball at the tip. Punch a hole near the bottom on each side, add string ties, and it's ready to wear. Larger children can cut their own larger circles out of poster board or a large sheet of construction paper, and continue as above.

  2. 2

Create a snowman hat. For a dapper snowman top hat, cut a rectangle out of black construction paper or poster board an inch or two longer than the circumference of the child's head and 18 to 25 cm (7 to 10 inches) wide. Tape or staple the short ends together to make a tube. Trace one end of the tube onto another piece of black construction paper. Carefully cut out the circle and tape it to one end of the tube as the top of the hat. Cut another circle 5 to 7.5 cm (2 to 3 inches) out from the traced circle for the hat brim. Tape into place. Add Christmas stickers to decorate, if desired. Punch holes at the base of the tube, one on each side, and add string ties.

  3. 3

Fashion fabulous Wise Man crowns. The three Wise Men were kings, so fancy crowns are definitely in order. Measure the child's head and mark a band that length plus 5 cm (2 inches) on the back of a sheet of yellow poster board. Draw some fancy points, leaves or other designs on the crown. Cut out the crown. Add glitter to the front of the crown and staple the ends together.

  4. 4

Create a Christmas tree hat. Make a green cone by following the Santa hat instructions. Let the children decorate their "trees" with markers, stickers and glitter. Punch the holes and add string ties as above.

  5. 5

Make an elf hat by following the instructions for the Santa hat: Make it green instead of red and leave off the cotton balls. Let the kids decorate their elf hats with Christmas stickers or markers.
