Making a fabric or felt bookmark is a great beginner's craft project because it is simple, quick and the materials are inexpensive. This is an excellent project for a child or a classroom of students. Bookmarks make great Mother's Day or Christmas gifts, or they can be sold at crafts fairs.
- Skill level:
- Moderately Easy
Things you need
- 5-by-10-inch piece of felt or fabric (one per bookmark)
- 2-by-9-inch piece of card stock (one per bookmark)
- Fabric scissors
- White glue
- Patterned scissors
Choose a piece of felt or fabric that you like. If you are making the bookmark as a gift, consider the occasion. Red and green felt is perfect at Christmas, while fabric with a spring floral design is great for Mother's Day.
Cut the felt or fabric so that it is 5 inches wide and 10 inches long. This measurement does not have to be exact and can be adjusted depending on how large you want the bookmark to be.
Cut the card stock into pieces 2 inches wide and 9 inches long. Again, adjust for the size of the bookmark you wish to make.
Fold the felt or fabric in half. Spread glue on both sides of the card stock, slide it into the middle of the sleeve and press the material firmly onto the card stock. Smooth it out so that there are no glue bubbles. Let it dry.
Trim the felt or fabric so that it is even with the card stock. Use sharp scissors. If you want to make a patterned edge, use patterned scissors and cut some of the card stock along with the fabric. This will make the bookmark smaller but give it a more interesting look.
Glue some ribbon onto the top of the bookmark. You could also choose to punch a hole in the bookmark and tie a ribbon through the hole. If don't want to use a ribbon, consider gluing a button near the top of the bookmark. This will keep the bookmark from sliding down into the book.
