How to Calculate an FTE Count

An FTE (Full-Time Equivalent) count in the business environment refers to the number of employee full-time positions. A full-time position generally corresponds to 40 working hours per week. Human Resources departments use FTE rather than a worker headcount to calculate an amount of labour among full- and part-time employees. As an example, you can calculate the FTE count for two part-time employees if one works 2.5 hours per day and the second works 1,460 hours per year.

Multiply 2.5 hours per day by five working days per week to calculate the number of working hours per week for the first employee.

In our example, the number of hours equals 2.5 x 5 = 12.5.

Divide the number from Step 1 by 40 to calculate FTE for the first employee.

FTE equals 12.5 / 40 = 0.313.

Multiply 40 hours per week by 52 weeks to calculate the number of hours per years that corresponds to one FTE.

1 FTE equals 40 x 52 = 2,080 hours per year.

Divide 1,460 hours per year by 2,080 hours per year to calculate FTE for the second employee.

FTE equals 1,460 / 2,080 = 0.702.

Add up the FTE of each employee to calculate an FTE count.

In our example with two employees, FTE count equals 0.702 + 0.313 = 1.015.
