Seagrass carpet is a natural-fibre floor covering that you can glue directly to the subfloor. Seagrass is naturally stain resistant, all natural and environmentally friendly. It feels softer underfoot than other natural-fibre carpets and has water-resistant properties. Despite the name, seagrass carpeting does not come from the ocean but is made from grass fibres found in rice paddies.

Measure the length and width of the room in which you want to install the carpet. Add 10 cm (4 inches) to each edge. Cut the seagrass carpet to fit the measurements, then centre the carpet in the room on the bare floor so the carpet overlaps the wall on each side by 10 cm (4 inches).

  • Cut the seagrass carpet to fit the measurements, then centre the carpet in the room on the bare floor so the carpet overlaps the wall on each side by 10 cm (4 inches).

Leave the carpet in the room for 24 hours to acclimate to the humidity level and temperature. These factors can cause seagrass to shrink or expand, so installing it without the 24-hour period may result in the carpet warping.

Roll up the carpet after 24 hours. Set the carpet aside.

Use a u-notched trowel to spread carpet adhesive over the bare subfloor at a rate of 4.5 litres (1 gallon) of adhesive per 0.65 square metres (7 square feet) of floor. Start the adhesive application on the subfloor area farthest from the door. Apply the adhesive across the first third of the floor.

  • Apply the adhesive across the first third of the floor.

Unroll the carpet over the adhesive along the first third of the floor, leaving a 10 cm (4 inch) overlap up each wall with which the carpet comes into contact. Press the carpet into the adhesive with a carpet seam roller. The latex backing must have complete contact with the adhesive to prevent warping.

  • Unroll the carpet over the adhesive along the first third of the floor, leaving a 10 cm (4 inch) overlap up each wall with which the carpet comes into contact.

Apply the adhesive to the second third of the bare subfloor, unroll the carpeting over the adhesive, and press it into the adhesive the carpet seam roller. Continue until you apply adhesive and press the carpet into the entire floor surface. There should be a 10 cm (4 inch) overlap of seagrass up each wall.

Run a wall carpet trimmer along the edges of the walls to remove the overlap and tuck the edge of the carpeting into the wall. Allow the carpet to sit for 48 hours before moving the furniture into the room.

TIP

If you are installing the carpet in rolls instead of one large sheet, use a carpet trimmer to remove the factory seam before installation. Use the carpet seam roller to smooth the seams that meet as you install the rolls.
