Maglite flashlights are one of the most popular brands on the market, but many people would like to convert the Maglite from incandescent to LED, thus saving on the batteries and bulb replacement, while still keeping the sturdy reliability of the Maglite flashlight. Fortunately there are two ways to do this. You can purchase an inexpensive kit, or you can do a full blown do it yourself project. There are pros and cons to each method.

  1. 1

Purchase the LED conversion kit. It is available from, Battery and several other sites. Once you have the kit, simply follow the instructions for installing it. Replace the mirror in the Mag's head and stick the leads into the converter like you would the regular bulb. Be sure to get the positive and negative correct. Once you have it installed, you will find that your AA batteries will last you much longer. And it is unlikely that you will ever need to replace the bulb. The only problem with this kit is that you are still using AA batteries, which means that the LED light is going to be less bright than you might want. If you want a brighter light, skip this step and move on to step 2 and the "do it yourself" version.

  2. 2

Drill a 3mm hole through the dowel from end to end. Cut the heads off the two nails, leaving two pieces about 5mm long.

  3. 3

Wrap one of the resister leads around one of the nails. Then place this part inside the dowel and super glue it. After the glue dries, wrap the other resister lead around the other nail, and glue it in place as well. This creates a spacer, since the N batteries are smaller than the AA batteries the flashlight used before.

  4. 4

Insert the spacer and the batteries into the flashlight.

  5. 5

Replace the bulb by first cutting a slightly larger hole in the reflector so the LED will fit. The cut the leads from the LED bulb to 5mm and push them in where the old bulb was seated. And that's it.
