How to Change Transmission Oil in a Mitsubishi Galant

Updated April 17, 2017

Designed as an economical alternative to pricier sedans, the Galant is a roomy and fun-to-drive sports car. There are a few maintenance items that will need to be performed regularly to assure a long and useful life for your Galant. One such job is replacing the transmission fluid, which is not difficult and can be performed in an afternoon.

Drive the car for about 10 minutes to warm up the fluid and make it easier to drain completely. Park the car on a level surface, set the parking brake and use the jack to jack the front of the car off of the ground.

Crawl underneath the engine compartment and locate the transmission pan right next to the car's driveshaft. On the centre of the bottom of the transmission pan is the drain plug. Use a socket wrench to remove the plug.

Allow the transmission fluid to drain into the drain pan, then replace the drain plug. On the driver's side corner of the transmission is the transmission fill hole. Remove the bolt filling the hole using the socket wrench, then insert the plastic tube from the fluid pump into the hole.

Pump 3 qt. of oil into the transmission and replace the filler hole bolt. Lower the car off of the jack and take it for a spin.

Wear gloves and goggles when draining the fluid, as it can splash in your face.
