How to Change the Email Password for Hotmail

Updated March 23, 2017

To access your e-mail account on Hotmail, a free web-based program, you must successfully enter the password associated with the account. If you know your current Hotmail password, you can access your Hotmail account options to change your password. If you do not remember the account password, you will need to provide accurate answers to the security questions associated with the account before you can change the password.

Open your web browser and go to the Windows Live Hotmail web address (see Resources). Log in to the account associated with the password you wish to change.

Click on the "Options" drop-down menu located beneath your Windows Live ID in the upper right-hand corner of the page. Select the "More Options" link at the bottom of the drop-down menu.

Select the "View and edit your personal information" link under the "Manage your account" menu. Re-enter your account password if prompted to do so.

Click on the blue "Change" link next to the "Password" section under the "Password reset information" menu. Type your current Hotmail password underneath the line that displays your e-mail address.

Enter your new password in the corresponding line. Re-enter the password on the next line to confirm the new password. Click "Save" to apply the changes to your account password.

Open the Windows Live Hotmail web address (see Resources) in your web browser. Click on the blue "Forgot your password?" link under the blank sign-in sections.

Enter your Hotmail e-mail address in the first field. Enter the characters shown in the image into the "Characters" field and click "Continue."

Choose a method for your password to be reset. You can choose to provide your location information or have the instructions e-mailed to you. Your password can only be reset by e-mail if you have a valid e-mail address linked to your Hotmail account.

Enter your country, state and zip code of residence if you choose to reset your password through the first option. Enter the answer to your secret question, as well. Click "Continue." Enter a new password into the first field, and retype it into the next field. Click "Continue" to commit the changes to your password.

Access the email account associated with your Hotmail account if you chose to have your password reset instructions e-mailed to you. The alternate e-mail address associated with the account is shown when you select the email option. Open the email and click on the hyperlink provided to reset your password. Enter your Hotmail account name in the first field and then enter your new password in the "Password" field. Confirm your password by retyping it into the next field. Click "Continue" to save your new password.

Choose a password that will not be difficult to remember and that cannot be easily guessed by others. Change your password periodically to safeguard your account.
