Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • slow music
  • room to dance
  • partner
  1. 1

Learn the rhythm. Rhythm is the underlying beat of the music. The rhythm dictates how and when you move. Practice tapping out the rhythm with your foot first, then try it with your partner. Do this exercise until you and your partner can do it in unison. Remember, slow dancing is the melding of the two bodies into one movement.

  2. 2

Learn the dance. There are a myriad of slow dances, and you and your partner have the ability to learn them all. Begin withe something simple. A basic slow dance is the figure 8, and difficulty increases until you get to the very technical Tango. With your partner a few feet in front of you and leading with your left foot, take one step for each beat until you both have walked in a figure 8. Do this a few times till you feel comfortable.

  3. 3

Embrace your partner and do the dance again. Hold your partner's body so close that you can feel his or her body on yours. Again, with your left foot, and going in unison, began walking the rhythm of the song in the classic 8 style. The man will give slight pressure with the hand on the woman's back or her waist.

  4. 4

Practice with various different types of styles and movement. The more you dance, the better you'll get.

Tips & Warnings

  • A great way to get comfortable with a partner or a dance is to move through the dance together without touching. The more you dance, the easier it is.
